Animal Health Tips from Our Pet Emergency Clinic: Signs of a Sick Rabbit
Posted on 2011-10-04 09:31:37
Rabbits tend to hide symptoms of illness, making it difficult for owners to know for sure when something is wrong with their pet. The veterinarians and staff at our emergency vet hospital recommend that you familiarize yourself with your rabbit's normal disposition, activity level, and litter box behavior. You could save your pet’s life by seeking prompt veterinary evaluations when your rabbit exhibits any atypical behavior. There are some behaviors that rabbit owners can watch out for that are indicative of a health problem and may require veterinary care. In general, owners can spot problems by looking for behavior that is out of the ordinary for their specific rabbit. For example, rabbits that are in pain may suddenly begin grinding their teeth. In addition, difficulty breathing, chronic sneezing, watery eyes, or a runny nose are also signs that your rabbit needs medical attention. Drool, a decrease in appetite, or sudden difficulty eating hard foods can indicate a dental problem that requires veterinary treatment. Rabbits that suddenly appear unbalanced or have a head tilt may be showing signs of an inner ear infection. Finally, keep an eye on your rabbit’s litter box. A change in the consistency or frequency of your rabbit’s pellets can indicate a health issue that warrants a trip to the vet.
